Pickleball is a relatively new sport that has exploded in popularity in recent years. Everywhere you turn, pickleball courts are popping up. It is a cross between badminton, tennis, and table tennis, and is played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. The paddles are smaller than tennis racquets and the balls are made of plastic with holes in them.

Pickleball is generally considered to be a safe sport, but there are still some risks of injury. The most common injuries are:

  • Sprains and strains: These can occur in the ankles, knees, and shoulders. They are most likely to occur when players make sudden movements or twists. I have seen individuals who have torn their Achilles tendon, ACL, and even rotator cuff due to a pickleball injury.
  • Tennis elbow: This is an inflammation of the tendons in the elbow that can be caused by repetitive use of the arm.
  • Eye injuries: These can occur if a ball or paddle hits the eye. Wearing eye protection is may help prevent these injuries.
  • Falls: These can occur if players trip or lose their balance. They are more likely to occur in older players or players who are not used to playing pickleball.

To reduce the risk of injury, it is important to:

  • Warm up before playing.
  • Stretch after playing.
  • Wear proper footwear.
  • Use the correct equipment.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid backpeddling on the court when unconditioned.
  • Communicate with your partner.

Overall, pickleball is a safe sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. By following these safety tips, you can help to prevent injuries and enjoy the game to the fullest.

Here are some additional safety tips for pickleball:

  • Play on a well-maintained court.
  • Avoid playing in wet or slippery conditions.
  • Be aware of other players on the court.
  • Don't swing your paddle wildly.
  • Keep your eye on the ball at all times.

If you do experience an injury, it is important to seek medical attention right away. According to UBS analysts, people are forking over approximately $250 million to $500 million to address pickleball related injuries. The report estimates that pickleball will lead to over 50,000 emergency room trips.

Pickleball is a great way to get exercise, have fun, and socialize with friends and family. By following these safety tips, you can help to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience.
